How to change fonts on Instagram
There is no font setting in the app. You copy styled text from a tool like this one, then paste it in.

How does an Instagram font generator work?
Every letter, symbol and emoji on your phone comes from one shared standard called Unicode. It holds far more than the plain alphabet. It also has sets of letter shapes that were added for maths, like bold, script and double-struck.
A font generator swaps each letter you type for its twin from one of those sets. The result is still plain text. That is why you can copy and paste it into Instagram, and why it keeps its look on other apps too.
What font does Instagram use?
Instagram uses its own typeface, Instagram Sans. Every account sees the same one, and there is no way to change it.
Stories are the exception. The story editor has a small font list built in, and those are real fonts. Everywhere else, a font generator is the only option. It swaps the letters, not the font.
Instagram Sans arrived in May 2022 as part of a brand refresh. Instagram said people could use it in Stories and Reels (Instagram blog). It is a real typeface, so no copy and paste tool can make it.
Instagram story fonts work differently
Stories and reels are where Instagram gives you a real font menu. You do not need a generator for them.
- Open the story editor and tap the Aa icon.
- Type your words. A row of font names shows above the keyboard.
- Tap a name to switch fonts, then set the color and size.

Each style has a Unicode name and an everyday name. Most people search for the everyday one, so both are listed.

Bold and small caps show up correctly on almost every phone. Superscript and inverted are missing a few letters, so the odd character stays plain. Inverted also flips each letter without reversing the word, so it reads left to right.
This generator has no strikethrough, underline or glitch text. Those styles work by stacking extra marks on each letter. If you need them, this is not the tool for the job.

The username rule catches a lot of people out. Instagram allows only letters, numbers, periods and underscores there, so no generator can style it. Why some letters turn into boxes
A box means the device has no picture for that character. Older Android builds and a few desktop browsers miss the rarer ranges. Your text is fine. The screen just cannot draw it.
Check a new bio on a second phone before you settle on it. Bold and small caps almost never break.
Do fancy fonts hurt your reach?
There is no sign that Instagram treats styled text differently. It is ordinary Unicode, the same class of character as an emoji. If your reach has dropped for another reason, check our Instagram shadowban guide.
Search is the real cost. Instagram matches keywords in your name and bio when people search. Styled letters do not match a normal search term. If people find you by typing "yoga teacher", write those two words in plain letters.
Fonts for your Instagram bio: a layout that works
Start with the look you want, then pick the one style that gives it.
- Clean and aesthetic: small caps, or script for a single word.
- Bold headline: bold for one short line above your plain text.
- Gothic or Old English: fraktur, best kept to a name or one word.
- Retro or techy: monospace, which looks like a typewriter.
- Cute and playful: bubble text, with the emoji toggle switched on.
