TikTok’s username rules
TikTok is stricter than most apps about handles. These rules all come from TikTok Help.

TikTok username vs name: what is the difference?
Every TikTok account has two names, and people mix them up. The username is the @ handle. The name, which TikTok also calls a nickname, is the bigger text above it.

TikTok username ideas with your name, and without it
Both work. Using your name builds a face people recognise. Leaving it out keeps things private and lets you hand the account over later. Pick the pattern that fits, then fill in the blanks.
- Name plus what you do: mayabakes, joerunsfar, sam.paints
- Name plus a small word: itsmaya, hey.joe, samdaily
- Two words about your niche: slowcoffeeclub, thriftedfits, mapleandmoss
- Made-up word: lumeo, verlin, sootka. Short, and far more likely to be free.
- Your job or role: theplantguy, budgetmum, gearnerd

Each style follows a simple pattern. Pick the matching tone in the tool and it will lean the same way. The names below only show the pattern, and some will be taken, so swap in your own words.

How to check if a TikTok username is available
There is one reliable way: ask TikTok. Open the app, tap Profile, then Edit profile, then Username. Type the name in. TikTok tells you right there if it is taken. Nothing changes until you tap Save, so you can test your whole shortlist.
You can also try tiktok.com/@thename in a browser. If a profile loads, the name is gone. If you get an error page, it might be free, though TikTok sometimes holds names back. How to change your TikTok username
Found a free name you like? The change takes four steps (TikTok Help).
- 1Open your profile
In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- 2Tap Edit profile
The button is on your own profile page.
- 3Tap Username
Type the new name. Check the spelling twice.
- 4Tap Save
Your profile link changes with the name. The next change is 30 days away.
Run through this list before you tap Save.
- Read it back to yourself out loud
- Check it does not spell something odd when the words run together
- Search the name on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube so you can match it later
- Ask one friend to type it from memory
- Only then use your one change for the next 30 days
Rare and short TikTok usernames: 3, 4 and 5 letters
Short handles look clean, which is exactly why they went first. Anything under six letters that is also a real word was almost certainly claimed years ago. The floor is two characters, so one letter names do not exist at all.
