How to reset your TikTok algorithm

TikTok has an official button that resets your For You feed. Here is where it is, what it keeps, the other ways to steer the feed, and a note for creators.

The TikTok For You feed open on a phone

TikTok has an official button for this. It is called Refresh your For You feed. Open Settings and privacy, tap Content preferences, then tap Refresh your For You feed (TikTok Help). Your feed clears and TikTok starts recommending videos as if you were a new user.

The refresh does not touch your follows, your likes or your saved videos. Only the recommendations reset. You can use it more than once (TikTok Help, Refresh your For You feed).

That is the whole answer for viewers. Below are the exact steps, what the refresh keeps, and the smaller controls that steer the feed without a reset. There is also a short honest section for creators who hope a reset will fix their views.

The official way: Refresh your For You feed

TikTok added this feature in March 2023 (TikTok Newsroom). Before that, the only option was a new account. Here are the steps.

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile in the bottom right.
  2. Tap the menu in the top right, then Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Content preferences.
  4. Tap Refresh your For You feed.
  5. Read the note about what happens, then confirm.

Go back to the For You feed. It now shows a mix of popular videos, the way it does for a brand-new account. From here it learns from you again.

What the refresh keeps and what it clears

Item After a refresh
Recommendations in the For You feed Cleared and restarted
Accounts you follow Kept
Videos you liked Kept
Saved videos Kept
Your own videos and profile Kept
Refreshing again later Allowed, you can do it more than once

There is no undo button. If you refresh by mistake, go back to watching what you like and the feed rebuilds from there.

One thing to know. The feed does not stay blank. It starts learning from the first video you watch after the refresh. So the useful part is not the reset itself. It is what you do in the hour after.

Other controls that retrain the feed without a full reset

A full refresh is a blunt tool. If most of your feed is fine and one kind of video keeps showing up, use these instead.

Not interested. Press and hold on a video and tap Not interested. This is the fastest single signal. The same menu offers Hide videos from this user and Hide videos with this sound, which cut a whole account or a whole sound in one go.

Filter video keywords. In Settings and privacy, under Content preferences, you can add words. Videos whose captions or hashtags use those words stop appearing in your feed.

Clear watch history. In Settings and privacy, look for Activity center or Watch history. Clearing it removes the record of what you watched. You can clear search history from the same area.

Watch and like what you want more of. The feed learns fastest from positive signals. Finish a video, like it, and it will show you more like it.

Control Where Best for
Refresh your For You feed Settings and privacy, Content preferences A feed that has gone completely wrong
Not interested Press and hold a video One video type you are tired of
Hide videos from this user Press and hold a video One account
Hide videos with this sound Press and hold a video One sound that is everywhere
Filter video keywords Settings and privacy, Content preferences A topic you never want to see
Clear watch history Settings and privacy, Activity center or Watch history Removing the record of a session

How to train the new feed fast

The TikTok help page on recommendations says the feed learns from watch time, finishing, liking, sharing, following, and skipping. Skipping fast is a strong negative signal. Device and account settings matter less.

So, in the first hour after a refresh, be deliberate. Search is the fastest way in. Type the topic you want, open the results, and watch three or four videos to the end. The feed now has a clear signal about what you came for.

  • Search for the topics you want and watch a few videos to the end.
  • Like the ones you actually want more of.
  • Follow two or three accounts in that topic.
  • Skip fast on anything you do not want. Do not watch it “to see”.
  • Tap Not interested on anything that slips through.

Do this for a few sessions and the feed settles. It will never be perfect, because it also keeps testing new things on you. That is by design.

Tip: the biggest mistake after a refresh is hate-watching. If you watch a video you dislike all the way through, the feed reads that as interest. Skip it in the first second instead.

For creators: what you cannot reset

A lot of people search for “reset TikTok algorithm” because their videos stopped getting views. They hope a reset will make TikTok see their account fresh. It will not, and here is why.

Refreshing your For You feed changes what you see as a viewer. It says nothing to TikTok about your account as a creator. The two are separate.

On the creator side, there is nothing to reset. The TikTok help page on recommendations says each video is tested on a small group and judged on how that group reacts. A run of poor videos does not “damage” the account. The next video takes the same test as any other.

That is good news. It means the fix is inside the next video, not in a setting. Our guide on how to go viral on TikTok explains the test and what the first 3 seconds have to do. If views are the problem, start with how to get more views on TikTok.

Deleting your videos, making a new account, or “going dark” for a week do nothing that the next good video does not do better.

Watch out: if a video shows 0 views, it is probably under review or the account is private. A refresh of your own feed will not change that.

Where GetLikes fits

We sell TikTok followers, 100 for $3.95, and TikTok views, 1,000 for $4.95. Neither has anything to do with your feed as a viewer, and a fresh feed says nothing about your account as a creator.

What bought followers and views do: make a profile look established when strangers arrive. What they do not do: change how the For You feed tests your videos. That test runs on watch time and interaction from TikTok’s own group. If your videos are not getting views, fix the video first. If the profile looks empty once people arrive, that is the part we can help with. Orders need only a public username, never a password.

A routine for keeping the feed useful

  • Skip fast on anything you do not want. Do not watch it to be polite.
  • Tap Not interested once a day on the worst offender.
  • Add a keyword filter for any topic you are done with.
  • Like and finish the videos you want more of.
  • If the feed is more than half wrong, refresh it and spend one deliberate hour training it.

The refresh is free, keeps your follows, and can be repeated. The trick is to treat the hour after it like the first hour of a new account, because to the feed, that is what it is. The same idea on Instagram is in our guide on how to reset the Instagram algorithm.

Questions people ask

How do I reset my TikTok algorithm?

Open TikTok, go to Profile, open the menu, then Settings and privacy. Tap Content preferences, then Refresh your For You feed, and confirm. TikTok clears your recommendations and starts again as if you were a new user (TikTok Help). Your follows, likes and saved videos stay. You can do it more than once, so there is no need to save it for an emergency.

Does refreshing your For You feed delete your likes or follows?

No. The TikTok help page says the refresh resets recommendations only. The accounts you follow, the videos you liked, and your saved videos all stay. Your own videos and profile are untouched. The only thing that changes is the mix of videos in the For You feed, which starts over and learns from what you watch next.

How long does it take for the TikTok algorithm to reset?

The refresh is instant. The feed changes as soon as you go back to it. TikTok does not give a time for how long it takes to learn your new tastes, and it never stops learning. In practice the feed starts to settle after a few sessions of finishing what you like and skipping fast on what you do not. Be deliberate in the first hour.

How do I change my TikTok algorithm without resetting it?

Press and hold a video and tap Not interested. The same menu can hide videos from that user or with that sound. In Settings and privacy, under Content preferences, add keyword filters for topics you never want to see. You can also clear your watch history. Then finish and like the videos you want more of. The feed learns from these signals without a full reset.

Can I reset the TikTok algorithm for my own videos as a creator?

No, and you do not need to. Refreshing your feed changes what you see, not how TikTok treats your videos. The TikTok help page on recommendations says each video is tested on a small group and judged on its own. A run of weak videos does not damage the account. The next video takes the same test as any other, so the fix is in the video.

Will resetting my feed help my videos get more views?

No. The refresh only affects the For You feed you scroll. Your videos are ranked on how a small test group reacts to each one: watch time, finishing, likes, shares and skips (TikTok Help). To get more views, work on the first second, the length, and the caption. A reset of your own feed does not reach any of that.
