How to go viral on TikTok (and what viral means)

There is no official number for viral on TikTok. Here is how the For You feed picks videos, per TikTok itself, and what you control in the first 3 seconds.

A TikTok video with a view count in the millions

There is no official number for going viral on TikTok. TikTok does not define the word, and its help pages never use a view count as a target. The industry uses two rough conventions: 100,000 views is a breakout for a small account, and 1 million views is viral for anyone. Those are habits, not TikTok rules.

What TikTok does publish is how the For You feed picks videos. Its help page on recommendations says the feed ranks on how people interact, on what is in the video, and a little on account settings. Follower count is not a signal. Past viral videos are not a signal.

So going viral is not about your account. It is about one video passing a series of small tests. This guide explains those tests and the parts you can control.

What “viral” means on TikTok

Ask five creators and you get five numbers. There is no line inside TikTok that a video crosses to become viral. The 100,000 and 1 million figures are industry conventions, used because they are round.

A better way to think about it: a video is viral when it reaches far beyond the people who follow you. For an account with 200 followers, 50,000 views is a viral video. For an account with 2 million followers, it is a quiet day.

One number does have an official meaning. The Creator Rewards Program needs 100,000 video views in the last 30 days (TikTok Creator Academy). It also needs 10,000 followers, original videos over 60 seconds, an age of 18 or older, and an eligible country. So a viral run can matter for money, not just pride.

How the For You feed picks videos

The TikTok help page on recommendations describes three groups of signals.

Signal group What is in it How much it counts
User interactions Likes, comments, shares, follows, watch time, finishing a video, skipping a video The most
Video information Captions, sounds, hashtags, effects Used to match a video to people
Device and account settings Language, country, device type The least

The same page says the feed is not based on follower count and not based on whether you had a viral video before. Every video starts from the same place.

This is the part that surprises people. The account with 3 million followers and the account made yesterday both send each new video into the same test.

The test audience

The TikTok help page says each video is shown to a small group first. What that group does decides the next step. If they watch to the end, like, comment or share, the video goes to a larger group. If they skip, it slows down and stops.

This repeats. A viral video is one that passes round after round. It is not one that got lucky once.

Two things follow. First, the video has to work for strangers, not for your fans. The test group has never seen you. Second, a skip is a signal too. A slow opening does not just fail to help. It tells the feed to stop.

The 3-second rule and what else you control

TikTok has said, in its advice to advertisers, that the first 3 seconds decide whether people keep watching. Most creator guides go further and call finishing and rewatching the strongest signals. You control all three.

  1. Open on the payoff. Show the result, the mess, the before and after, or ask the one question the video answers. No greeting, no logo, no “so today”.
  2. Cut the intro. If the point arrives at second five, the test group left at second two. Start the video at the point.
  3. Keep people to the end. Hold something back. Say “the last one is the worst” and mean it. A viewer who leaves early lowers how many people finish.
  4. Loop the ending. End on the frame you started on. Rewatches happen without the viewer deciding to.
  5. Add readable captions. A lot of viewers watch with the sound off. Text keeps them past the first second.
  6. Use a trending sound while it is rising. Sounds are video information the feed uses to match you to people (TikTok Help). A sound at its peak is crowded.
  7. Write a caption for search. Use the words a stranger would type. Our free TikTok hashtag generator finds them.
  8. Post on a schedule and answer comments. The TikTok page on growing your audience says to post regularly, use its editing tools, engage with your community, and consider Promote. Comments are interaction, and a video reply makes a second video from the first.

Tip: watch your own video with the sound off and your thumb ready to scroll. If you would scroll in the first second, so will the test group.

What does not make a video go viral

Follower count. TikTok says it is not a signal. A big account starts each video from the same test as a new one.

A past hit. Also not a signal, per the same page. Each video starts over.

Hashtag spam. #fyp and #viral tell the feed nothing about who should see the video. One real keyword does more than ten empty tags.

Deleting and reposting. The video did not fail because of timing. The same file gets the same result, and the second copy is now a duplicate.

Resetting your own feed. That changes what you see as a viewer, not how the feed treats your videos. Our guide on how to reset the TikTok algorithm explains the difference.

Bought views. More on this below, but the short version is that the test group decides, and bought views do not sit in the test group.

Posting more of everything. Volume helps only if each video passes the test. Ten slow openings in a week is ten failed tests.

What to do when a video takes off

A viral video sends thousands of strangers to your profile. Most of them will open it, look for two seconds, and decide. Be ready before that happens.

Make sure your bio says what you post and how often. Put two or three of your best videos in a Series or Playlist so a visitor watches more than one. Post a follow-up within a day, while the traffic is still arriving, on the same topic.

If you are near the Creator Rewards line, this is when the 100,000 views in 30 days becomes reachable. Remember the views must come from original videos over 60 seconds to count for that program (TikTok Creator Academy).

Our guide on how to get more followers on TikTok covers how to turn that traffic into followers.

Where bought views and likes fit

We sell TikTok views at $4.95 per 1,000, likes from $2.95, and TikTok followers at 100 for $3.95. So here is the honest version.

Bought views cannot make a video go viral. The For You feed decides that by watching what its test group does, and bought views are not in that group. Buying is also against TikTok’s terms, and the usual response is removing the fake numbers.

What they can do is make an account look established. When a viral video sends strangers to a profile with 30 followers and videos at 12 views each, many of them bounce. The same strangers on a profile that looks active are more likely to stay and follow. That is the whole use case, and it only pays off if a real video brings the traffic.

Orders start within minutes and need only a public username or a video link. We never ask for a password.

A checklist before you post

  • The point of the video is visible or spoken in the first second.
  • There is no intro, greeting or logo.
  • On-screen text works with the sound off.
  • The ending gives a reason to rewatch or to follow.
  • The caption uses words a stranger would search for.
  • The sound is rising, not peaked.
  • The bio says what the account posts.

Run every video through that list. Most will not go viral, because most videos do not. But each one that passes the test group teaches you what strangers finish. For the day-to-day side of views, read our guide on how to get more views on TikTok.

Questions people ask

What is the 3-second rule on TikTok?

TikTok has said, in its advice to advertisers, that the first 3 seconds decide whether people keep watching. The rule is simple: put the point of the video in those seconds. Show the result, the surprise, or the question. Cut greetings and intros. The For You feed treats a skip as a signal, so a slow start tells it to stop showing the video.

How many views do you need to go viral on TikTok?

There is no official number. TikTok does not define viral and never sets a view target. The common conventions are 100,000 views as a breakout for a small account and 1 million as viral for anyone, but those are habits, not rules. The one official number is 100,000 views in 30 days, which the Creator Rewards Program needs (TikTok Creator Academy).

How does the TikTok algorithm work?

The TikTok help page on recommendations says the For You feed ranks on three things. User interactions, such as likes, comments, shares, watch time, finishing and skipping. Video information, such as captions, sounds, hashtags and effects. And device and account settings, which count for less. It does not use follower count or past viral videos. Each video is shown to a small group first and widened if they react.

How do I get on the FYP on TikTok?

Every public video is already tested on the For You feed with a small group. Getting further means that group finishes and shares it. Open on the point in the first second, keep it short, add on-screen text, and write a searchable caption. Post regularly and answer comments, which is what the TikTok growth page advises. There is no switch to flip.

Why am I not getting on the FYP on TikTok?

Your video probably reached a small test group and they scrolled past. That is the most common reason. The fix is the first second, the length, and the caption. If the video shows 0 views, it may be under review or the account may be private. A drop after a hit is normal, because each video is judged on its own.

Can buying views make my video go viral?

No. The For You feed decides by watching what its test group does, and bought views are not in that group. Bought views make a video look watched on your profile, which can help strangers who arrive from a real hit decide to follow. That is the only thing they do. They also break the TikTok terms, and the usual response is removal of the fake numbers.
